Energy and resource efficiency at the core
Across our business divisions, we operate in sectors such as food, packaging materials, machinery and equipment, and aviation services. All of these activities consume energy and resources. This is why we focus on developing processes that reduce energy and material use.
We monitor our own energy consumption and energy efficiency. Our business divisions assess energy efficiency investments, such as upgrading refrigeration equipment, and explore opportunities to utilise solar power in production. We aim to select energy sources that reduce emissions from our own operations. In 2024, we secured the use of renewable electricity for our operations in Finland by entering into a renewable electricity power purchase agreement with Statkraft. Under the agreement, we will purchase renewable electricity from Finnish sources for ten years. The contract covers, among others, Wipak’s production facility in Nastola, which is Wihuri’s largest in Europe.
Across our business divisions, we regularly measure and monitor waste volumes and recycling rates. Our aim is to reduce waste and increase recycling rates. At Metro-tukku, this includes minimising food waste. In packaging, products are designed to be more easily recyclable by using mono‑material solutions, which also simplifies the treatment of production waste. By considering end‑of‑life recycling already at the design stage, we reduce the risk of products ending up in landfill or incineration. To further reduce production waste, investments have been made in packaging operations to enable recyclable waste to be reused within production processes.
