Companies and every one of us as consumers and citizens alike have to try to live and operate in a responsible manner respecting the environment and each other. Jetflite’s sector – business flying – is not known of its friendliness to the environment, and on several occasions, I had to ponder my own standpoint and the answers to the questions made to me regarding this matter.
Flying is not an ecological act. The share of aviation of the carbon dioxide emissions in total is 2-3%. Flying is not declining, quite the opposite. Flying is estimated to duplicate to 8.2 billion travellers in the next 20 years.
The technology of the planes develops constantly in low-emission direction, but the demand of air travelling increases much faster.
How about Jetflite? The less there are passengers in the plane, the greater one passenger’s carbon footprint is. The carbon footprint of our passengers is manifold compared to that using scheduled air services. Are we the worst of the worst?
Jetflite flights are not comparable to Finnair flights, just like taxi rides are not comparable to bus travelling. Our service meets a completely different need. You cannot go to Nizhny Novgorod via Astana and from there to Budapest in two days. If you need to be somewhere at exactly four o’clock, scheduled flights are not always a functional option. A patient who had an accident will not be able to fly back home in economy class. Just like the most inveterate supporter of public transport has to use taxi to get home from the Christmas party if the buses do not operate; considered this way, business flying might also be the only alternative.
Our opportunities at Jetflite to decrease environmental impact are limited. One day, the planes will fly with electricity or hydrogen, but this day is far in the future.
Biofuels exist already, but their price is high and offering is limited. As the availability of biofuels progresses over the coming years, a large part of kerosene will be replaced with fuel made of renewable materials. This, alongside with the development of technology, will decrease significantly the emissions of aviation, also ours.
Jetflite can do and already does a great deal operationally. We can see to the fact that food is not discarded on our flights, that we recycle everything that is recyclable in our hall and that we decrease the carbon footprint of our halls and office. The flight routes can be planned as optimally as possible: if the flying distance shortens, also the emissions decrease.
The usage of business flights for need is not unethical or questionable. Everyone can decrease and ponder one’s own carbon footprint, but judging flying or putting an end to flying entirely is not realistic. The same goes also with motoring, meat eating or banning plastic entirely; also regarding these matters, new solutions and courses of action are created instead of prohibition. The emissions should decrease, and they will over the coming years thanks to the development of technology and smart decision-making in the politics.
